Common questions

Good things to know before you start

Which areas do you work in?

We work from Ladysmith to Qualicum Beach and everywhere in between, Nanaimo and Gabriola Island included. For projects further afield, we’re happy to talk about travel costs.

What happens after I get in touch?

We start with a conversation and a walk around your property, so we can see the site and hear how you want to use it. From there you get a plan drawn for your yard and a quote for the work. Nothing is ordered or planted until you’re happy with the plan.

Do you design gardens, build them, or both?

Both, and we can maintain them afterwards as well! Design, construction, planting, irrigation and seasonal maintenance are all done by us, so the person who drew the plan is the person who installs it.

When is the best time to plant on Vancouver Island?

Fall is the best planting window here. A common misconception is that you can’t plant once the weather turns cold, but we can keep planting right up until the ground freezes. The fall rain and still-warm soil let roots grow through winter, so plants are established before summer. Spring planting works too, but it needs more watering through the first dry season.

Will deer eat a new garden?

Deer are a fact of life in most Nanaimo neighbourhoods, but a garden can be planned around them. We lean on plants deer usually avoid, such as those with aromatic or fuzzy leaves, and protect young plants while they establish. No plant is completely deer-proof.

Do native plant gardens look messy?

Not when they’re done right. With the right plant selection and regular maintenance, a native garden can look just as beautiful and intentional as any other. Clear edges, defined paths and plants grouped in drifts give it structure, so it reads as a garden rather than an overgrown lot.

How do you design for summer watering restrictions?

By building the soil first, mulching well, and choosing drought-tolerant plants, so the garden gets through restrictions without looking tired. Plants with similar water needs are grouped together, so the thirstiest corner doesn’t set the schedule for the whole yard.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Nanaimo?

Not for walls up to 4 feet (1.2 metres) tall. Taller walls usually need a permit and an engineer’s design. We follow local regulations on every wall we build, and can construct them from a variety of materials to suit the look of your garden.

What does a garden project cost?

Project budgets vary widely depending on the scope, the materials used and access to the site, so we quote after seeing it. We can make accommodations to fit any budget, or work in phases so the most important work comes first.
